Learning an additional language is a long and complex undertaking. The whole person is affected as (s)he struggles to reach beyond the confines of his/her first language and into a new language, a new culture, a new way of thinking, feeling, and acting. Total commitment, total involvement, a total physical, intellectual, and emotional response are necessary to successfully send and receive messages in the target languages. Grasping an understanding into the wide range of variables involved in the language acquisition process and understanding how the learner learns will determine the philosophy of education, the teaching style, the approach, methods and classroom techniques used by teachers. Hence, understanding the mechanisms of learning is likely to lead to successful teaching as the process of the latter is regarded as the facilitation of learning.
